The WINGS Industry Network Newsletter, Volume Two, Issue One

Patricia K Mathes, Manager National FAA Safety Team

Proficient pilots are safer pilots. That’s why we always encourage pilots to participate in the FAASTeam WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program (WINGS). We are excited that WIN has developed E-Z WINGS online to make earning your WINGS easier. Pilots can request credit for WINGS Activities they have completed with just a few clicks.

Flight Instructors can just as easily validate those credits or give WINGS credit for training they have completed with that pilot. Later this year, E-Z WINGS will become available in the Apple App Store and Android App Store. This will make it even faster to use E-Z WINGS by making it more efficient to login with your FAASafety.gov credentials. The WIN directors' work, effort, and expertise have made this possible through outstanding collaboration with FAASTeam leadership. For that, we thank them. Read more.

Patricia K. Mathes, National FAASTeam Manager

The Directors of WIN asked me to share my thoughts on a series of questions. In this issue they asked "What can you do to help our cause?"

Improving access to tools available will create smoother and easier access to multiple-phase qualifying activities, in particular, practical tests and flight reviews. Allowing my staff to continue to work with the WINGS Industry Network to develop easier access to these qualifying activities will no doubt increase awareness and participation in WINGS. Read more.

From Patricia K. Mathes, National FAA Safety Team Manager

"The Directors of WIN asked me to share what I see as my role in enhancing the WINGS Program.

One of my roles as the National FAASTeam Manager gives me the opportunity to facilitate creative ways to reach aviators seeking proficiency training. For the WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program to be successful, our Team researched accident and incident causal factors. Utilizing the results helped us determine how to structure the specific program when developing and approving ground and flight curricula. In addition, we continue to evaluate ways to incentivize pilots to make participation more attractive. With the help of the WINGS Industry Network, we see great ways to grow the program; not only driving more participation but disseminating safety information to the broader aviation industry community." From Patricia K. Mathes, National FAA Safety Team Manager

"Hello from the National FAA Safety Team (FAASTeam). My name is Patricia Mathes and I was recently selected as the National FAASTeam Manager. The previous manager, Valerie Palazzolo, has moved to another important role in the FAA. My plan is to keep the FAA’s Pilot Proficiency Program (WINGS) strong and relevant. Val’s previous work engaging with the WINGS Industry Network puts me in the ideal position to help WIN’s efforts to increase industry involvement in WINGS.

General aviation safety has always been a core mission for me. I’ve known all too many aviators from so many walks of life who found themselves coming up short due to a lack of proficiency. The FAASTeam is excited to continue partnering with WIN to keep more pilots safe in their aviation endeavors. Thank you for all you do!" Read more.
